The Italian economy continued to suffer along with most of Europe. Once again the larger cars began to depart at 8 a.m. and early action involved cars of the 1100 cc class. The favored Maseratis found themselves challenged by the upstart 3-car team of British M.G. K3 Magnettes who were personally invited by the King of Italy and Mussolini to enter an official team. M.G. K3 MagnettesThe K-series represented MG’s mid-size car, featuring a modified inline-6 borrowed from Woseley’s Hornet.

MG took this 1100cc engine and used a cross-flow head, a magneto and, for the first time, a preselector gearbox. For the top-of-the line K3 Magnette, MG added a Marshall supercharger, and in doing so, created one of the most successful British race cars. The British team also had a secret weapon in the form of a Mercedes-Benz driven by Englishmen Clifton Penn Hughes. The same car used by Caracciola to with the 1929 Tourist Trophy actually carried a full selection of M.G. spare parts! Starting after the Magnettes was their very own traveling workshop and breakdown car. The British team would score a famous win in their class while their Mercedes service barge managed a quite respectable 24th.

With Alfa Romeo in a rush to build new cars for the upcoming Grand Prix formula for 1934, one that would set the legendary Silver Arrows on an unsuspecting motoring world. Their drivers, now including the 1931 Mille Miglia winner, Caracciola were left to their own designs driving semi-works Alfas. With or without the factory these were still the cars to beat.

Favorites amongst the drivers included last years winner Borzacchini and of course Nuvolari. Borzacchini rocketed away on a brutal early run, too brutal it seems for his car when it suffered a cracked head at Terni on the route back from Rome. The lone works Mercedes of von Brauchistch also succumbed and Nuvolari now assumed the lead which he would not surrender building it up to nearly an hour before cruising, if that were possible for the Flying Mantuan, to Brecia and the checkered flag. Nuvolari was greeted by thunderous cheers but even the most diehard Italian fan had to give some respect to the new British contingent, if not from them then surly from the vanquished Maserati drivers.
